Being an aspiring engineer you are supposed to carry out a lot of research activities. In my first year of engineering I, as part of a group, was given an Environmental Studies project. The aim was to find and put forward solutions to problem given to us as our topic. Our challenge was to reduce the plastic waste generation in our college campus more eco friendly.
We were given a month of time to ready our projects. Our group started with analyzing the sources of plastic waste in campus. The major contributor was found out to be the canteen, producing hundreds of plastic cups and bottles daily. So now our focus shifted on collecting some proper statistics of the waste from canteen. I discussed with the canteen owner about the daily sale of beverages and usage of plastic cups for juices and milkshakes and noted down the findings. On tallying the findings it was found that around 5 kg of plastic waste is generated daily from canteen itself. Our solutions included making campus students aware, propagating to bring their own bottles as much as possible, and replacing the plastic cups with glass cups. A couple of team members researched about the vending machine size plastic bottle recyclers and feasibility of installing one in the campus. At the end everything was put together in from of a presentation and finally presented on the decided day.
Although ours was not the best it was truly a great learning experience.
